When will Coen and Sander start with Joe? “It could take months”

Five months after news broke of Coen Swijnenberg and Sander Lantinga’s move to Joe, it’s still unclear when the two will be heard on the radio. A spokesperson for Joe did not respond to questions about the start date. It’s clear that Coen and Sander are bound by the non-compete agreement they signed with Radio 538: so they won’t be able to make themselves heard on Joe yet.

Coen and Sander announced on Thursday, September 28 that they will be leaving 538 to join Joe the morning hours show up between 6:00 and 9:00. The next day the duo could no longer be heard on 538; the channel immediately removed the two from the channel. Since then there has been silence around the former 538 DJs.

Non-compete clause

A non-compete clause roughly requires that radio DJs who move to another radio station first have a “cooling off period.” During that time they are not allowed to produce radios for their competitor, in this case Joe, under penalty of often heavy fines. The idea of this non-compete clause is that the other broadcaster – the competitor – cannot directly benefit from the new radio DJs, namely Coen and Sander.

It is unclear how long the non-compete clause will last. Joe reports on his website that Coen and Sander will begin “in 2024.” Radio columnist Patrick Kicken he wrote before that it could take until May before Coen and Sander start doing the morning show on Joe. Until then, Kimberley Dekker presents the morning hours.
